Born and raised in Detroit MI, Loves, sings, and write music with a meaning. The name Deacon Soul stands for what I say and how I say it.
My name is LARRY YOUNG. I’m also known as Deacon Soul. I was born and raised in Detroit MI. I was introduced to music at a very young age. My dad was an avid Jazz lover so it was nothing to hear Miles or Coltrane in the house.
My mom loved all kinds of music but her favorite was Gospel. Later on she began singing in both a Gospel and R&B group. Since I can remember I wondered how I could mesh the two together. Once Hip-Hop was born I was also into rapping and break dancing. I was part of a dance group called Timex, and a rap group called TLC. Both only had local success.
After graduating from Central Michigan University in 1997 I moved to Florida with my new wife. There is where I began singing gospel. First I sang with the New Generation Choir, then the Bethel Community Male and Mass Choirs. Known for my soulful and old school sound, I was approached by Paul Williams and asked to become a member of Poetic Praise, which later became True Koinonia. Together we combined R&B, Gospel, and Hip-Hop to develop a sound that could only be copied. This is the sound of Deacon Soul….
